The Sir Run Run Hospital Neuro ICU (NICU)

The Sir Run Run Hospital Neuro ICU (NICU) is a modern, state-of-the-art intensive care unit that serves patients with neurological and brain & spinal injuries.  The ICU serves patients from all over Jiangsu Province as well as patients with special needs throughout the country and abroad. The center is directed by Fenglin Li, M.D. and Nianjun Zhu, M.D.。
Mission: To provide exceptional care for patients with neurological and brain、spinal injuries in a safe, welcoming environment in the context of the University Hospital mission (To provide excellence, innovation and superlative quality in the care of patients, the training of health professionals, and the creation and sharing of health knowledge within a culture that promotes equity, diversity and inclusiveness).
The Neurocritical care faculty includes board certified neuro-intensivists physicians who specialize in caring for critically ill patients with neurological injuries. In the closed-cooperative model, all critically ill neurological patients admitted to the NICU are cared for with by the ICU team in coordination with the admitting team physicians.
    The Unit provides care for:
? Primary neurological injuries such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, stroke, intracranial hemorrhages, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, status epilepticus, brain tumors, encephalitis and meningitis, myasthenia gravis crisis, and hypoxic ischemic injuries.
? Medical and neurological consequences of acute neurological injuries or complex post-operative neurosurgical patients such as management of cardiopulmonary instability and intracranial hypertension.
? Patients who need special neurological monitoring or treatment such as therapeutic hypothermia, continuous EEG monitoring, advanced intracranial monitoring, or specialized ventilator management for neuromuscular disease and acute spinal injury patients.

    The Division of Vascular Neurology

The Division of Vascular Neurology evaluates, treats and studies diseases which affect the structure and function of the blood vessels supplying the brain. Our main purpose is to provide the best possible care for our patients with stroke cerebrovascular disease. The center is directed by Haibing Shi, M.D.、Yizhong Lv, M.D. and Xingxia Wang, M.D.。
The academic mission is two-fold: (1) to represent the principal educators of cerebrovascular disease for the Nanjing Medicine University, the NMU Neurology Residency Program, and practitioners throughout China; and (2) to investigate novel translational approaches to more effective acute stroke treatments, better secondary stroke prevention strategies and to improve stroke recovery and rehabilitation.

Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics

The Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics (CNET) is devoted to finding therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, Parkinson’s disease.  CNET’s core goals are to promote the discovery of novel treatments for neurodegenerative disorders through basic and translational research, to teach scientists and clinicians about these diseases, and to facilitate the application of these discoveries to clinical care of patients. The center is directed by Meijiang Fen, M.D.

    The Division of Neurogenetics

Neurogenetic diseases—inherited diseases of the nervous system—are being diagnosed in growing numbers among both children and adults, as a result of advances in biochemical and molecular genetics.
The Division of Neurogenetics at Sir Run Run Hospital, Nanjing Medical University is experienced in the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of these rare, progressive, and often debilitating disorders. The many neurogenetic diseases we manage include Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs), leukodystrophies, mitochondrial disorders, genetic epilepsy syndromes, inherited ataxia syndromes,Huntington’s disease and Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (FALS) .
Neurogenetic diseases typically require complex, lifelong healthcare management. Our team of highly skilled neurologists works to address the specific needs of patients with these conditions, including biochemical and molecular testing and genetic counseling. Since these disorders impact more than just the nervous system, our team collaborates with experts from specialties across China for treatment of related medical issues. The center is directed by Qi Niu, M.D., Qingwen Jin,M.D and Xunning Hong,M.D.

    The division of Neuropsychology
The division of Neuropsychology in the Department of Neurology is an active participant in each of the three primary missions of Nanjing Medical University: Clinical Service, Research, Education
Clinical Service :The Neuropsychology Program in the Department of Neurology offers clinical support to Sir Run Run Hospital physicians providing care to patients with neurologic or neuropsychiatric disease.   Neuropsychological testing uses specialized measures of cognition such as memory, attention, and problem solving that are sensitive to brain function.  There are a lot of psychological tests, a single test and a complete set of quizzes. A single test is a method of measuring a function, which is easy to reveal the damage of the brain, such as the connection test, the Bender-cloze test (Bender-Gestat test), and the digital symbol test in Merriam-Webster's intelligence tests. The complete set of tests includes various forms of testing, such as Halstead neuropsychological kits (H. R), Luria-Nebraska neuropsychological kits, and so on. Neuropsychological evaluations are performed at the request of physicians for the purposes of establishing a diagnosis to facilitate patient care, measuring the degree of cognitive change associated with established brain impairment, determining whether there have been changes in cognitive or behavioral function over time, and establishing risks of intervention associated with specialized treatment s such as brain surgery or electrical stimulation.
Research  :Neuropsychology faculty have developed successful programs through State and provincial grants to investigate areas such as memory compensation strategies for patients with mild cognitive impairment as well as effects of epilepsy surgery on language and semantic memory.  Faculty also participate in established clinical programs  in Cognitive Neurology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, and Stroke in treatment intervention trials that are designed either to improve neuropsychological abilities, or to minimize neuropsychological side effects associated with treatment.   The Neuropsychology Program has research programs that relate neuropsychological abilities to underlying brain structure and function using advanced techniques such as MRI and functional MRI.  We are grateful to patient participation in our research studies so that better understanding of neurologic disease and treatment intervention will decrease the burden of disease for future generations.
Education :  Educational opportunities are available for students exploring practicum and internship placement.  Practicum opportunities are arranged through individual neuropsychology faculty.
The center is directed by Jun Xu, M.D.,Wenhua Ma,M.D.。
